ActivePerl 5.8 and 5.10 only available in Business Edition and Enterprise Edition

Hi sherly,

We have some news regarding our support policy that you might be interested in learning about.

The official Perl 5 community support for Perl 5.10 ended with the release of Perl 5.14.0. However, ActiveState has continued to support 5.8 and 5.10 for Business and Enterprise Edition customers along with the newer releases, which is in-line with community support policies.

With the release of Perl 5.14.1, ActivePerl 5.14 is the recommended version for new development projects.

If you would like assistance in moving from ActivePerl 5.8 or 5.10 to a more recent version, please contact us directly. We have Perl experts available to audit and migrate your code. You can find ActivePerl 5.12 and 5.14 in ActivePerl Community Edition.

Sign up for our next webinar on Wednesday July 13 at 10:00 AM Pacific The Continuing Evolution of Perl: Highlights of Perl 5.14

In this webinar for Perl developers and system administrators, join Jan Dubois, Senior Perl Developer at ActiveState, and Troy Topnik, Technical Communications Specialist at ActiveState to learn:

  • What's new in Perl 5.14
  • Community version support policies
  • Refactoring or maintaining existing code
  • The new web frameworks: Mojolicious and Dancer
  • Running Perl applications in the cloud

ActiveState has Acquired Phenona, Perl Cloud Company

To view this email as a web page, click here

ActiveState has big news to share with you:

We have acquired Phenona, a Perl PaaS (Platform as a Service)!

Phenona was founded by 15-year-old Daniil Kulchenko of Seattle when he couldn't find a way to deploy his contract Perl apps to the cloud. He decided that there should and could be an easy solution for Perl cloud deployment, created Phenona, and took the Phenona solution to beta a few months back.

The Phenona technology, knowledge, and talent will extend our cloud strategy while helping us accelerate our development in the fast-paced cloud market. Phenona's use of open source components, portability, security and multi-tenancy model all fit closely with our cloud strategy and we will leverage Phenona's stack into the ActiveState cloud product roadmap.

The acquisition of Phenona solidifies our commitment to bring you, our ActiveState customers and subscribers, the best solutions for dynamic (scripting) languages on the cloud.

ActiveState recently entered the cloud market with Stackato, the first end-to-end enterprise cloud platform for Perl and Python (currently in Developer Preview).

Read the full Phenona acquisition press release, or—if you want to get on the cloud—sign up for the Stackato Developer Preview, and get your Perl and Python apps on the cloud!

Regards,

Stackato:
Why we chose to build our Perl and Python platform on Cloud Foundry

ActiveState was thrilled with the arrival of VMware’s Cloud Foundry platform. The demonstrations of this technology at VMware's launch of the Cloud Foundry PaaS showed everyone how deploying Ruby, Node.js and Java applications to the cloud could be simple and fast.

We have chosen Cloud Foundry as the infrastructure for Stackato, ActiveState’s cloud platform for Python & Perl, and we believe that it will become the dominant platform for dynamic language application hosting in the cloud. Learn why we chose Cloud Foundry as our the infrastructure for Stackato or  sign up for the Stackato Developer Preview.

New Whitepaper:
OS-Independent Interpreters

We have a new white paper, hot off the press - OS-Independent Interpreters: Preventing incompatibility with cross-platform Python, Perl and Tcl (PDF).

Programs that require an interpreter to run dynamic languages (such as Perl, Python, Ruby, PHP and Tcl) will often be set up with the required runtime in an ad-hoc manner, which can have consequences:

  • Subtle breakages in the application: Backwards compatibility is a design goal of Perl and Python releases, but there are sometimes changes which are not backwards compatible.
  • Testing needs to be redone: If the software is business or mission critical, a new round of testing may need to be undertaken to verify the software.
  • Lock-in to a specific operating system version: You may end up tied to a particular version of an OSbecause upgrading would change the language version.

Read more and learn how to avoid issues (PDF) by using a platform-independent language distribution.

Meet Us at an Upcoming Event

ActiveState has always been a big supporter of the Perl, Python and Tcl communities, and 2011 is no exception. We're sponsoring several events and groups this year, and wanted to highlight a few that we'll be attending in person. We'd love to meet you there!

EuroPython (June 20-26, Florence, Italy)
Gisle Aas, Senior Developer, will be making the "ultimate sacrifice" and traveling to Florence. Join him for his talk, Best Practices for Python on the Cloud. He'll be presenting on June 21st at 14:30. Check out the EuroPython schedule.

ActivePerl 5.14 Has Arrived

Perl 5.14 has arrived, making the promise of yearly major version releases a reality, and ActivePerl 5.14 came out hot on the heels of the core language release.

Perl now has much improved Unicode support, especially in regular expressions. New syntax includes a non-destructive "/r" substitution option that returns a modified string. Exception handling is more reliable and consistent.

The ActiveState Perl Package Manager (PPM) repositories are currently being updated with CPAN modules compiled for 5.14.

Differences from the previous release are covered in detail in the perldelta document. It provides an excellent summary of the new features and shows you what to look out for when upgrading.

Perl Dev Kit 9.1 will follow the Perl and ActivePerl 5.14.1 stabilization releases, and include support for Perl and ActivePerl 5.14.

This month's Quick Poll should take no more than one minute to complete.

One respondent will receive their choice of a Komodo IDE license or a Perl Dev Kit (PDK) license,  just for taking the time to participate.! Take the quick poll now.

Thanks to everyone who participated in May's quick poll. Congratulations to Gregory Bolstad of worrystone.net who has won an ActiveState t-shirt! We will be in touch to arrange shipment.
